Информационно - коммуникационные технологии в обучении английскому языку

Выступление на городском экспертном совете учителя английского языка Скосаревой О. Н.)

INFORMATON AND COMMUNICATIONTECHNOLOGIES IN TEACHING ENGLISH

According to the transition of all educational institutions of the Russian Federation to the new Federal educational standards the development strategy of school No5 was designed.

The main direction of the modernization strategy of our school is using information & communication technologies (ICT) in the educational process. We think that ICT satisfy the needs of the child’s growth in modern digital socio-cultural environment. That’s why we can see our school as digital school or the school of the digital age.

What is ICT? Today, it includes e-boards, smart phones, iPods, et cetera. Any type of e-boards with a good internet connection, for example, has virtually abolished the need for players, VCRs, TVs, maps & posters, textbooks, audios, and even the classroom. What remains unchanged are the two basic elements of the educational process: student and teacher. Whether we speak of any typical school, any classroom, or online/distance learning, we still need the subject and object, the eternal duo, the interaction between the one who can teach and the one who (hopefully) can learn.

ICT is a great tool for gathering information, for finding any number of teaching aids online. One can make a lesson brighter and more exciting by using videos and audios, texts and pictures from the web. Provided the connection is fast enough, one can quickly travel from site to site when needed.

As for our school we now use different kinds of activities in the context of ICT at our lessons. All the teachers of our school are the participants of the all-Russia project “The school of the digital age”. Within the bounds of this project we use e-version of our professional magazine “1 September” and different methodic applications. We actively use the competence-oriented tasks which help the students assimilate into the real life and apply their knowledge in different everyday situations.

We are active users of the Federal Centre of Informational Resources. This centre offers different tasks on listening, reading and grammar. And all these recourses can be used within one theme. They help to develop phonetics, listening skills, reading skills, grammar and of course speaking.  They can be used at the different phases of the lesson: at the beginning of the lesson, while introducing a new theme, for stirring up knowledge, for checking students’ progress. We can work with these exercises using either multi-media projector or e-board.The using of the e-board makes lessons interesting and exciting.

ICT makes Student-Centered Learning and Teaching, or an Individual Approach to Teaching, a reality. And we use this method in our work. Our students take part in the International Subject Olympiads, pass the online tests, and do tests in remote access. These tests are created by our teachers themselves. It is easy to assign eachstudent a task or tasks according to their ability and interests, to check their progress and grade their work. A teacher can download various materials in advance, so that an excellent student can do a dozen various exercises, while the weakest student will plod through just one or two of them. It takes a lot of time and organization, but it pays in the end.

ICT is also necessary for the teacher’s qualification, for teacher’s professional development. Various Teacher Refresher Courses, professional development courses, webinarscan be found at most educational sites (Zavuch.Info.ru; EnglishTeachers.ru; Pedsovet.ru). Our teachers regularly attend different courses and seminars either internal or virtual.

Listening is one of the main line in teaching English. We use different audio and video resources which are meant for the whole class. But the greater effect can be achieved during the individual work. That is why our aim is to fit up our classrooms with the equipment for individual work.

We have enough net-books which we can use to organize an individual work. But it is necessary to have a device to charge several net-books simultaneously. This device allows recharging 20 net-books at a time. The cost of such device is about 100000 rubles.

Also we are planning to acquire the LEGO-set “Create your own history”. This set is a very good educational tool for developing language skills, creating stories and discussing different topics. It helps to make writing and reading more fascinating for children, it teaches students to work in groups, trains literacy and motivates students to formulate and express their thoughts. The LEGO-set “Create your own history” is designed according to the new Federal educational standards and up-grades teaching at the lessons of native and foreign languages, literature, history and other humanitarian subjects.

The cost of the project:

1.     Lego-set “Create your own history” – 6069 rubles

2.     Software and methodical recommendations– 5965 rubles

3.     TOTAL – 12034 rubles

But for more effective work it is necessary to have several sets.

Another tool we would like to have is the system of e-voting. Voting system is high intellectual equipment aimed to perform questioning and check students’ knowledge. This complex consists of remote consoles, a signal receiver and software.  All this is necessary for operative creating questionnaires, their analysis and evaluation of the results.  Every student has a console and with its help they answer the questions choosing the right variant or writing a word or a word-combination. This complex can be used at any classroom which is equipped with a computer, e-board or a projector and a screen. It gives a good opportunity for creating questionnaires and tests. Using this system the teacher will always know at what stage of the lesson he is. The system of e-voting allows creating your own questionnaires which can be used at different phases of the lesson, seminar or conference. While students answer the questions using their consoles, the system of e-voting makes a complex analyses and shows the answers on the screen. Everybody can see what answers and how many of them were given. There are several types of e-voting system such as VOTUM, SMART Response PE and others. The average cost of e-voting system is 56000 rubles.

Our teachers are the teachers who find a lot of new materials, who compose their own e-lessons, who take part in various online activities. And to make our efforts useful, effective and efficient we need some help.
